Drew Estate isn't known for making conventional cigars. All of their cigars offer Jonathan Drew's determination to think outside the box when it comes to producing cigars. This project was born when Drew and Steve Saka put a Kentucky fire-cured leaf over a Liga Privada cigar and saw the potential of the unique leaf. Fire-cured tobacco is produced by burning a variety of woods, hickory, oak and maple in the case of the Kentucky Fire cured, inside the tobacco curing barns for several days or weeks to cure the tobacco and to infuse the leaves with sweet, smoky flavors. For the first time, Drew Estate has ventured into candela-wrapped cigars, which use a distinctive green leaf that stands out in humidors and offers a distinctly sweet flavor that can take on notes of grass and vegetables depending on the particular varietal and process. The cigars feature a dual-wrapper design, with the candela leaf below the band and an undisclosed leaf above it. Both Swamp Thang and Swamp Rat are draped in two-toned wrappers: the top portion, according to the company, is barrel-fermented, Kentucky fire-cured tobacco leaf; the bottom portion is green candela leaf hailing from the Dominican Republic.
