Cohiba brand originates in Cuba. Before Cohiba was named it was an unlabeled special blend crafted by Eduardo Ribera, he would give these special cigars to friends….Cohiba as we know it in the good ole USA is produced and crafted by General Cigar Company in the Dominican Republic, which makes it the only legal Cohiba allowed in the USA. Using tobaccos from different countries all over the world including Nicaragua, Indonesia, The Dominican Republic and other varies countries to create a very rich and complex profile for the blends of the different lines they produce!
For the Cuban Cohiba the story goes like this, “Fidel Castro one day kept smelling an extremely pleasing aromatic, aroma from a cigar that one of his body guards was smoking. He asked him “What brand of cigar are you smoking?” only to be told that it is a special blend that a friend of him crafts. Sharing a few cigars with Fidel, he lit one up and it was so good he asked him “Is it possible to find this man and contact him?” After getting in contact with this man, he told Fidel about his blend and showed him where to get the tobacco from, how to it is blended, and how to craft these extremely fine cigars. Snowballing to the creation of the El Laguito factory and the Cohiba brand of cigars! Cohiba was the first post-revolutionary brand to be created and was a private label only for high officials of the Cuban government or as diplomatic gifts! The brand would not be available to the general public until the 80’s!
