Twenty years ago, in June of 1990, I was approached by the editors of The Miami Herald to help run a showcase article about cigars. Their idea was to dedicate a special issue of the paper to the cigar industry and its followers in the United States. An important element of the project was an impromptu "Cigar Rating Contest" (The C.A. Magazine was launched only a couple of years later). We helped the editors select a panel of judges from the best of our local customers, and then we were asked to make a short list of cigar brands to choose from. To make a long story short see the featured illustration including the final results. The winner was Partagas with Macanudo and El Credito (today: "La Gloria Cubana") right behind. The interesting thing about that story is the prices of the cigars in the story. For the sake of comparison, we made for you a sampler with the same cigars (except for the Zino) and at an average price of less than $3.50 a stick, this sampler will cost you, in our TODAY PRICE, less than what people paid 20 years ago.
