- President Barack Obama is poised to break the embargo wall around Cuba in an effort to repair the US relations with countries in Latin America. As a cautious, innitial step, the White House has moved to ease some travel and trade restrictions, in a move to improve ties with post-Castro Cuba, raising hopes of a complete lifting of the 40 year old economic embargo.
- In preparations for April 2009 Summit of The Americas, in Trinidad, it is expected that some US control measures will be abolished, signaling the beginning of a new era. The new provisions are included in a $410 Billion spending bill to be voted on by mid March.
- The new law will allow Americans with family in Cuba to visit and send money. There is a strong expectation that President Obama will announce further policy changes before the summit.
