Annual Cigar Trade Show Happenings

20 Aug, 2009

  • We have just returned from the Annual trade Show of the American cigar industry, which was held in New Orleans. Five days of meetings with all our suppliers, from the biggest (General Cigar Corp. - maker of Macanudo, Partagas, Cohiba, Hoyo and Excalibur among many more brands that we sell here day in and day out; Altadis - manufacturer of Montecristo, Romeo y Julieta, H. Hupmann, Siglo Limited Reserve, Don Diego ; etc.) through the mid-size companies such as Fuente, Davidoff of Geneva, and CAO, all the way to the hip boutique houses in the likes of Perdomo, Alec Bradley, Oliva, Camacho, Reyes Family and many many more. It is interesting to note here that in recent years we're seeing more and more takeovers and acquisitions of relative newcomers by the big and powerful cigar companies.
  • It started five years ago when Altadis purchased JR Cigar out of the blue and continued last year with the acquisition of C.I. by Swedish Match - the global conglomerate which holds General Cigar as well (interestingly, these created a scenario where the two biggest cigar makers also have their own cigar retail web site, leaving us at Mike's Cigars with only two major competitors as independent cigar mega-store outlets, where five companies were crowding before). This phenomenon spilled over into the manufacturing sector as well when the giant European Consortium "Skandinavisk" took possession of CAO. Davidoff is completing the take-over of Camacho Cigars and relative newcomer Cusano, and who knows what's coming next.
  • Typically, these transactions are announced in the wake of the annual trade-show where all the horse dealing takes place so we're all waiting for this year’s news. The annual trade show is also the place where everyone introduces their new cigars and this year, like every year, was hustling and bustling with many exhibitors showing new brands, new packaging, new campaigns, new gadgets and everything else you can imagine. Among the highlights for this year are the NEW Perdomo Grand Cru line, NEW Felipe Gregorio Felipe (Blue) and Capas, NEW Reyes Family Cinfuego, NEW La Aroma De Cuba from Ashton (coming later this year, right now they are picking up the old boxes). Perdomo is also changing the packaging of their great line of Perdomo Squared cigars and so and so forth. The new products coming from the New Orleans Show deserve a whole separate column and we will sit down to tell you more about them as soon as possible. Until then, relax and have a cigar.
