Romeo y Julieta 1875 is the modern reincarnation of one of the most famous Cuban cigars. Originally established in 1875 by Inocencio Alvarez and Mannin Garcia, Romeo y Julieta 1875 is one of the original Cuban cigar lines. Jose "Pepin" Rodriguez Fernandez, who was the former head of the Cabañas factory in Havana, and his firm Rodríguez, Argüelles y Cia bought Romeo y Julieta in 1903. Romeo y Julieta 1875 cigars are now made in the Dominican Republic by Altadis.
It was early afternoon and I was having a late lunch at the Bar of The Four Seasons in downtown Manhattan. These gentlemen sitting at the corner table were discussing business evaluation techniques for the purpose of “deal closing” strategies.
It was a slow day and I could not avoid hearing them in the relative darkness of the restaurant. “For me it is pretty straight forward” said a tall, grey haired man in a rolling Oxford accent. “If he is wearing a Brioni suit, it’s a deal”. “I’d check out his watch” his neighbor disagreed. Sipping slowly on his Scotch, he said: “If he sports a five grand Patek-Philippe, then we can shake hands”. The others nodded. Suddenly, the waiter popped up and whispered a question in the tall guy’s ear. The latter snapped his fingers and motioned the waiter to go ahead. The kid left and returned a few seconds later leading a guest in a dark, elegant, suit. I realized this man must have been the subject of their discussion. After several exchanges the new guy sat down, leaned backwards, digging out a leather cigar pouch from his jacket. As he opened it with one hand he reached down with the other one and grabbed a lighter from his pocket. It was a shiny sleek cigar lighter. He held it in his palm, flipping the spring loaded lead with his thumb. The click rang across the room like a revolver’s hammer as it falls on an empty chamber. “We have a deal” said the gentlemen around the table in unison…If you know lighters, then you know the sound of a cocked quality instrument. This sound means you have arrived. It is the dead giveaway of the absolute luxury and achievement, it is the utmost impression you can make. As an Authorized quality lighters merchant we offer a wide array of authentic super flint and torch lighters in your choice of elegant gold or silver or Gun Metal plates, stunning Palladium and exquisite Chinese lacquer finishes. Prestigious names such as Dunhill, Dupont etc. assure you timeless elegance in the finest of lighters. These fine quality lighters epitomize the precision engineering that went into making them one of the most admired objects of art in the world. One of my personal favorites is Romeo y Julieta Porto Real in Tubes. The rich aroma of oak, rich soil, lemon grass followed with flavorfull notes of almond cocoa pumpkin and butterscotch. Final finish with a clean but complex balanced smoke.
