The new Oliva Serie V Melanio line was created in tribute to the founding father of the Oliva tobacco empire, Don Melanio Oliva, who started growing tobacco in Cuba about 150 years ago. His grandson, Gilberto Oliva was the one to move the family tobacco enterprise out of Cuba after the Castro regime nationalized the cigar industry in the wake of the revolution. Introduced at the 2012 IPCPR, the Oliva V Melanio cigar is a celebration of the founding father’s life and takes the already world famous Oliva Serie V line to a whole new level. Like all Oliva Serie V cigars, the Melanio is medium-to-full bodied however, the Oliva Serie V Melanio line features an Ecuadorian Sumatra seed wrapper not seen on an Oliva cigar since the Masterblends II line and utilizes a Nicaraguan binder and all Nicaraguan filler blend. With sweet cocoa, nutty flavors, spiced up with peppery notes, the Melanio line is complex but amazingly balanced, with a long, smooth finish. Cigar experts predict that the Oliva Serie V Melanio will become the new pace setter for the entire brand and a magnet for real cigar lovers.
This is what Cigar Aficionado had to say about the #1 Cigar of 2014:
Nicaraguan tobacco helped Oliva survive. The cigar that brought it to the attention of connoisseurs debuted in 2006: Oliva Serie V. Made by a small group of rollers and blended for strength and style, the Serie V line was an immediate hit. In 2012, to pay tribute to the first man in the family to grow cigar tobacco, Oliva added the Melanio version, which is distinguished from the original by its Sumatra-seed wrapper grown in Ecuador. The Oliva Serie V Melanio Figurado has rich, big notes of leather framed by a range of coffee, caramel and woody intonations. It’s a classic smoke. Oliva’s cigars have appeared on our Top 25 list nine times in a row. This is the first time the company has been named Cigar of the Year." Credit: Cigar Aficionado Magazine
