Macanudo Café cigars have been amusing the well-heeled cigar aficionado for over five decades. They also have become notably intriguing and pleasant for the “new smoker” generation. Macanudo Café cigars are created by using a silky, golden, US Connecticut Shade wrapper that has been aged for 3 years. This process allows for a smooth and creamy smoke. These exquisite wrappers are combined with a Mexican binder and a Dominican-Mexican filler blend to produce a mild body, yet flavorful cigar that can be enjoyed by anyone. At Mike’s Cigars, we are proud to offer the standard Macanudo line, as well as the true Cafe line. Both the standard and café line are produced exclusively by General Cigar, for Mike’s Cigars. Macanudo cigars are recognized as the best selling cigar brand in America. Originated in Jamaica (1968), Macanudos were introduced to the US market by General Cigar in 1971. They have been widely known for their mild flavor and body. Due to unfavorable conditions in Jamaica such as the weather, Macanudo cigars are now produced in the Dominican Republic. All Macanudo cigars are made with the finest Connecticut shade wrappers, mild yet flavorful, twice-aged Dominican fillers, and binders grown in the San Andres Valley of Mexico. These great cigars are perfect for both men and women because of the smooth and robust taste. Also, most importantly they are best known for their consistency. Macanudo was the first cigar to capitulate on the American consumer tendency towards mellow flavors and consistent quality. The General cigar Corp. recognized the need to preserve consistency in order to maintain customer loyalty, and the company established a unique way to guarantee this consistency. The traditional way to achieve this goal until then was to ensure blend uniformity by way of introducing subtle variations in measurement in order to compensate for tobacco produce flavor fluctuations between different year’s crops. This is obviously not an accurate science but if you’re good at it you can mask small mutations by ‘blending’. In the long run you are going to end up chasing and re-chasing the original taste with appreciable customer grief. The solution devised by General Cigar was unprecedented and very expensive! Instead of applying traditional cures for blend variations they decided to go for the bank by securing large quantities of tobacco, procuring multi year harvests at one time, while using their own vast lands in Connecticut to produce the best shade wrapper in the world. This method required very deep pockets and General utilized their size advantage to the limit, creating the most popular cigar in the process.

We consider Macanudo as a monumental cigar, made at the best factory the world has to offer; The General Cigar Corp. –maker of Macanudo– They spend all the time and effort it requires in the development, caring, and aging of their cigars. Their unique Connecticut tobacco wrapper leaves follow as the final touch in the making of the Macanudo cigars. Macanudo was started in Jamaica, by Ramon Cifuente; creator of the Cuban Partagas. When General Cigar Company launched, the new Macanudo was developed into the biggest brand during that period. The factory was moved later to Dominican Republicwere they blend fillers from 10 consecutive annual crops to make the most consistent cigar in the marketplace. The wrappers are made from the finest Shade tobacco leaves grown in the Connecticut Valley and contribute some 60% of the flavor. Every time you light up a Macanudo cigar you can depend on enjoying the exact same relaxing pleasure. My father-in-law, Oscar, tells this great Macanudo story from many years ago (when he was working as a regional sales manager for GENERAL CIGARS). The company started the marketing campaign for a cigar, which eventually came to be known as the most popular cigar in America. We are, obviously, talking about MACANUDO. This story is interesting since it opens a window to the marketing strategies of corporate giants, with a lesson for everyone. As the story goes, during those years, the popular convention was that cigars, in order to be considered “premium” had to be either “full bodied”, or Cuban, or both. Oscar recalls that the only cigar available at the time, which resembled Macanudo, by character, was the Don Diego. Don Diego, together with another brand, which was very popular at the time, the Flamenco, were both later sold to General Cigars’ archrival, Consolidated Cigars, predecessor of today’s ALTADIS. But at the time of our story, these two brands were manufactured and marketed by Pepe Garcia from the Canary Islands. Don Diego and Flamenco were established, well known brands, and the Macanudo sales force was facing an uphill battle to acquire a decent market share. The marketplace showed great reluctance towards the new super-mild cigar, and store keepers expressed strong resistance to the newcomer, but the bosses at “General” were determined. Oscar’s people were instructed to place Macanudo boxes in every store and keep checking those placements on every visit. Once a month, they removed all the old boxes, from the shelf, and replaced them with fresh Macanudo boxes. Since nobody was buying the cigar during the first few months, this entire campaign was hinged on a huge budget. Nobody knew what happened to the removed boxes, they were shipped, willy-nilly, back to the corporate distribution center in Tampa. This effort continued for over a year until the heavy launching advertising blitz pushed sales to target values. Undoubtedly, incredible marketing achievement for a brand that till today is still holding first place with consumers.
